Across the river

Rabbit boarding for New York City

NYC apartments and rabbits do not leave much room for a sitter. Board your bunny just across the Hudson in a calm, rabbit-only home in West New York, NJ.

Why NYC rabbit owners cross the river

New York City has world-class exotic vets and almost no rabbit-specific boarding. If you have searched, you already know the shape of the problem: a handful of facilities that will take a rabbit alongside dozens of dogs, and a long list of sitters whose profiles mention "small pets" without ever mentioning hay, output, or stasis.

Rabbits are prey animals. They hide illness until it is well advanced, they cannot vomit, and a rabbit who stops eating for twelve hours is in genuine trouble rather than being fussy. A sitter who does not know that is not a cheaper version of the right care โ€” they are a different service entirely.

Bunny Comforts is a private apartment in West New York, NJ, where rabbits are the only animal I board and there is one boarding household at a time. No dogs. No children. No other client's rabbit sharing the space. For a lot of NYC owners, a twenty-five minute trip is a reasonable price for that.

Pick your borough

The trip is genuinely different depending on where you start, so I have written up the details separately:

Getting here, in general

West New York sits on top of the Palisades directly across the Hudson from Midtown. There are three practical routes from the city.

The Lincoln Tunnel is the most direct โ€” you come out in Weehawken and are minutes away. Traffic is the obvious caveat; a Sunday morning drop-off and a Friday evening one are different experiences.

The NY Waterway ferry from Midtown West to Port Imperial takes under ten minutes on the water, and the boarding space is a short ride up the hill from the terminal. Rabbits travel fine on the ferry in a covered carrier, and it avoids tunnel traffic entirely.

The George Washington Bridge is the sensible option from Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, and much of Queens, coming down through North Bergen.

If you are taking a taxi or rideshare, use a secure covered carrier, keep it on the seat or floor rather than the trunk, and let the driver know you have a small caged pet when they pull up.

Travelling with a rabbit, briefly

Rabbits handle short car trips better than most owners expect, provided a few things are true. Cover the carrier with a light cloth so they are not watching the world move past. Put a towel or mat in the bottom for grip. Bring a handful of their usual hay in with them. And do not be alarmed if they do not eat during the trip โ€” most do not, and they will start again once they have settled.

What matters more is the first hour after arrival. I leave new guests alone in the pen with hay and water to decompress rather than immediately handling them, which is usually the difference between a rabbit who settles the same evening and one who takes a day.

Medical care and daily updates

My own rabbit has megacolon, so motility medications, critical care syringe feeding, subcutaneous fluids and daily output monitoring are ordinary here. Medication administration is available for an extra $10 per day.

If your rabbit has a stasis history, dental issues, arthritis, a head tilt, or a diet that has to be followed precisely, we plan the stay around it at the meet and greet. I keep an exotic vet on call. And because you will be across a river rather than across town, you get a morning photo, an evening video, and two wellness checks a day covering appetite, output, posture and energy โ€” the four things that tell you early when something is wrong.

Rate

Boarding is $30 per night, plus $20 per night for each additional rabbit. Bonded pairs always stay together. The rate includes unlimited hay, fresh water, pellets on your rabbit's schedule, fresh greens per their diet, both daily wellness checks, and the photo and video updates. Medication administration is an extra $10 per day.

Every booking starts with a meet and greet. From the city that does mean an extra trip, so if that is genuinely impossible we can do a video walkthrough of the space instead โ€” but I would rather you saw it in person.
